New Years Eve in or out?

Can you believe it is New Years Eve tomorrow? This year has flown by it feels like just yesterday we were at this exact moment. I remember it more then others maybe because January 1st is my birthday. Growing up I thought everyone had their birthday off from school and had a parade the whole nine yards.Poof then I grew up! But as I got older I knew how special it was to have this time with family and not have to ask for the day off from work.Every year my mom and dad come back from the south, that’s where they retired, to spend most of the month of December. Let me see first my moms birthday the 18th then a week later Christmas and a week after that my birthday! It is such a joy to have them come home and be able to visit for as long as we can keep them.  The last holiday we celebrate with my parents before they head back home is New Years Eve . This is another tradition we have started about 18 years ago. When my first son who is now 19 was born we thought it would be a great night to go out so Nana said she would watch Andrew so we could enjoy a nice meal out. Well of course we thought this was awesome idea so we made our plans and got all dressed up(for us casual ones this in itself is a feat)and set out for a great night, or so we thought. First the traffic was a nightmare and boy everyone was in a hurry more then normal. We arrived at the restaurant about ten minutes before our reservation but ended up waiting another hour.(we talked about every thing while we waited that was really nice ) when we did get seated and started looking over the menu the prices were higher then usual and then when the food arrived it was not as good as it would be on a regular evening that we had gone before. So what was our take on this great night out,yes it still was great,we would have just as nice of time at home and would save a ton of money that we could use eating out twice on different days. That’s when it started….every year since my parents come over we do steaks on the grill…and oh my goodness they are so good and shrimp in the deep fryer. We all get to reflect on what  events stand out from the past year and what we are glad is done. It’s such a great way to bring in the new year fresh. We love it, no long waits, great conversation, great food , half the cost and we all stay safe !

So what do you do for New Years Eve? Do you have a tradition or change it up every year? What ever you decide to do I hope you are with loved ones and stay safe.Happy New Year..may all your hopes come true!

A good time to plan…

Well the bad weather finally came to Wisconsin. Well, maybe I shouldn’t say bad, so many people were praying for a white Christmas and didn’t see it so I guess those people are happy campers about now. Here in Wisconsin we wear shorts till it gets below 40 degrees(well most of us) and as much as we love to snuggle up to the warm fire in the fireplace it usually needs to get pretty cold before most of us complain. This winter has been a bit different last week I was shopping in a sweatshirt and today it is snowing /freezing rain….yikes! I’m one of those people who say it’s great to have a white Christmas but after that I’m fine if it starts to melt and we can move on to spring…not likely though January and February can be some cold long days.

With all the slipping and sliding I did this morning driving to the Fed-Ex store I decided to stay home and try to plan what my new years school calendar will look like and that sent me on a  search of other bloggers who homeschool and that had me reading and jotting down notes and getting so excited about all the things I would try to stuff into January…hahaha no really into this next few months. There is so much information out there and it just keeps getting easier to find it. When I first started homeschooling 18 years ago I had to sit in the library for days and bring home stacks of books to find out how in the world I was going to do this thing they called homesch0oling. It sure has been a journey and I have loved it every step of the way( with the exception of the days I thought I can’t do this any more ahhh)no really I had my doubts as with most moms and dad who choose this road but I’m really glad I stuck with it and my son who is in his third semester at  tech school would agree with me. My 10 year old son also is a big fan of learning at home.

So after reading and discovering some great new ideas I figured tomorrow  would be a new day and I would again set out to get this semesters lessons planned. Hmmm New Years is coming procrastination may get on that resolution list….that’s a whole new post!

Be blessed and snuggle those sweet babies tonight for this  day has gone by in a snap as they all do and time with them just goes to fast. Sweet dreams……

Last Minute Stocking Stuffers

Running around this time of year seems to be the thing all parents do. We check our lists and make sure everyone has that one thing they really wanted. But what happens when the last few days approach and we realize we don’t have the stuff for the stockings? Well, I have some great ideas on what to fill those socks up with and not break the bank. I’m a fan of the “Dollar Store” most people have a store near them that sells everything for a buck, some things are great buys and work great for this exact purpose.

Kids:

  • Glitter glue …every kid loves to spread this glue on every craft project.
  • Stickers…
  • Christmas socks…they can sport their Christmas spirit with a great sock style.
  • Card games
  • Puzzles…so many to choose from.
  • Activities books. again so many
  • Crayons.
  • Jump ropes
  • Army figures
  • Books
  • Stuffed toys

For the men young and old:

  • Earbuds
  • Duck tape…really what man doesn’t use Duck tape.
  • Hand warmers…for those colder days
  • Flashlights.
  • A great coffee mug.
  • Key chains
  • Auto car wash
  • Auto car washing rags

For girls and women:

  • Nail polish
  • Sample hair sprays…we all like them in our purse
  • Lotion
  • Hair accessories.. clips, hair bands, picks.
  • Cute nail files
  • Lip balm
  • Hot chocolate packets
  • Coffee packets
  • Craft stuff
  • Kitchen tools
  • Candles
  • Candle holders

I can find all these at our Dollar Store but whatever store is near you these are just a few great ideas to fill up the stockings. I also like gift certificates, think facials, pedicures, eye brows, favorite place to eat or shop.

Another great thing is to have your kids come with and pick things out to give others, they learn how fun it is to be involved and give. This gets them in the Christmas spirit .I know my youngest loves to pick things out for people on our lists and it sure makes me feel good to see him find joy in doing this. Christmas is a time for giving, let’s not forget the money isn’t the important thing…spreading joy and love and remembering that this is the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Off you go now….spread some love, joy and cheer…enjoy being with your family and try not to get to stressed…If you find a great idea let me know I would love to  hear it! Have a super day, be blessed!

Why do I always wait?

Can you believe Christmas is only four days away? AHHH  As you can see I am not ready….I always tell myself don’t do this, get the shopping done early…wrap before Christmas eve….do I do this….no. Am I alone? I think with more and more going on I lose track of why I am doing any of this in the first place…my kids…I have to admit I am a bit of a kid myself..who can resist a great cookie with frosting in the shape of Santa, or not really getting a good night sleep the night before because you can’t wait to see whats under the tree or what the faces of your little ones will look like when they open the perfect gift….ahhh the magic .The time we spend with family is priceless, irreplaceable.

I stop and think…slow down…take it all in…be with family…love on those kids…at 19 and 10 time goes really fast, before I know it they will be running around during the Christmas season for their own kids…Next year I will give it another try…I will not wait…How about you?

As we count down this year I look forward to next year. I have so many great ideas for homework to be fun and exciting, places we can visit (and learn from) some super fun craft ideas and more.I would love for you to join me a homeschooling mom on the many adventures that we find. Thanks for stopping by I’ll keep you posted on my last minute shopping finds!

Merry Christmas!
